If you want to show your puppy love and affection all day long, and do not want to leave your puppy in a crate for the majority of the day then this method is another solid approach. However, it is still a good idea to have a crate handy for when you leave the house, go to sleep or are not watching your puppy. You can allow your puppy to run around the house rather freely. However, you need to keep a watchful eye, because it is more likely for accidents to happen in the house. Make sure that you establish a normal routine where you take your puppy out about once or twice an hour. When they are going out to use the bathroom, always take them out on a leash, out the same door and to the same part of the yard. This will establish a routine for them and they will learn when and where they are supposed to "go" much faster. When you take your puppy out to use the bathroom carry a treat in your pocket so that you can instantly reward them if they go. When your puppy uses the bathroom outside, instantly reward them with love and a treat. If they do not use the bathroom outside, take them back into the house with no reward, and try to take them out again in a couple of minutes.
If your puppy uses the bathroom in the house try to catch them as fast as possible; preferably before they finish. You can stick their nose down to where they used the bathroom and sternly tell them "NO." This will help them learn that they are not allowed to use the bathroom in the house. However, do not stick their nose down into their accident because it can be unhealthy for the puppy. After any accidents, put your puppy on a leash and take them outside and try to get them to use the bathroom, repeating your command word or phrase.
